This recipe was passed down to me from my mother. I think she got it from a friend.
Cake batter
1 1/2 sticks of butter 1/4 cup shortening (crisco, for instance) 4 egg yolks 4 egg whites 1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla 2 2/3 cups cake flour 1 1/2 teaspoon baking powder 1/2 teaspoon salt 1 cup milk 1 cup hazel nuts, finely chopped (I put them in the food processor so they were very fine | |

Cream butter, shortening, and sugar. Add egg yolks. Sift all the dry ingredients together and add alternately with the milk and vanilla. Fold in 1 cup nuts. Beat egg whites and fold in the batter. Grease and flour three 8 inch cake pans. For a tube pan bake 1 hour. For layer pans bake 30 to 35 minutes at 350 degrees.
| Carmel Frosting
1 stick butter 3 tablespoons shortening (crisco, for instance) pinch of salt 1/2 cup milk 1 cup powdered sugar |

Cook first 5 ingredients over low flame til soft ball is formed. Mix with powdered sugar. Frost the cake. |
