'Kay, 'kay, 'kay - THIS is the scrapbook.

I am trying to teach myself how to do some really neat things with Corel's Photopaint (a program to touch up and manipulate clip art and graphics). I have found some tutorials on the internet and will be "testing" myself with them. I hope to use this space to show family photos and/or practice pieces I have completed with my photopaint. Now I have added Photopaint to my experimenting. I am now using Photoshop more often than Photopaint so there will be additions to this section using Photopaint. I am self-taught for most of the things I have learned but I have also taken a course at the community college. Come along on the journey.

The first offering is a photo taken when we were on a puppy hunting expedition. We ended up with this puppy when she grew to six weeks old. She is a happy healthy "California girl" now. She went to live with my son and his family in California. The photo was a normal 4 X 5 shot which included several family members and some of the farm-like buildings within the area of the shot. I used Corel's Photopaint 8 to put a simple "artistic" effect on it. I cropped the original then applied a vignette and changed the color to black.

Let me introduce you to Lacy. In our family our animals become a part of the family. So too with Lacy. She is a very slim, shy lovely young lady pup. On this photo I used Corel's Photopaint 9. I first masked Lacy then removed her from the photo and set her aside for the next step. I went back to the original photo and used a blur and zoom effect on it. I then went back to pick up Lacy and place her back on the now bulrred kitchen she originally came from. Now I increased the paper size, made a square mask around the photo itself; applied a texture fill in the area between the photo and the edges of the paper to put a "frame" around Lacy. Then I rotated the entire image and here it is.

Art This was fun to do! I used Corel's Photopaint 9. First I created a rectangle then filled it with the fill tool using texture fill and a preset called Utah Stone. Then I pulled up the photo I wanted to use and masked out my subject. I "cut" the subject from the photo and moved it to my Utah Stone background. Then I used the image sprayer tool with the foliage preset and "sprayed" folige to create a frame. I then created a circular mask to get the rounded image which seems to be what this particular photo needed. Photopaint has so many neat functions.

Mick This is my grandson laying on my front lawn in "the good ol' summertime" just enjoying a summers afternoon. I used Corel's Photopaint 9, cropped the photo to just the subject I wanted. Then I used effects, art strokes and sketch pad and changed the default button to color. Then I used effects, creative and vignette.

This is another of my grandsons enjoying one of the beautiful moments of life. Again, I used Corel's Photopaint 9. I cropped the photo.
Matt
Then I used effects, the frame feature new to 9 from photopaint 8, then added effects, creative, vignette.

Yet another of my grandsons with a hand held game that so many young people (not always so young, I like them too) are playing these days. I used Corel's Photopaint 8 this time
Game
because I wanted to use a feature that came with 9 but isn't included in 9. I used the Auto FX feature to get the edge effect I wanted then used the transparency feature to tone down the over all effect.

This one doesn't look like I did much to it but The original photo was to short at the top. I mean when I took the photo I had clipped off the top of bunny's ear and all the way across the rest of the photo left little room for manipulation. I was baby sitting with the bunny for my granddaughter and of course wanted to get some pictures of him. It was difficult to get him to stay still so that I could get the perfect photo. Anyway, here is what I did. Since I needed more room at the top I used the clone feature of photopaint 9 to put some more space at the top of the photo. I cloned the the background right around and including his ears. Oh, I almost for got there was a reflection of the flash in his eye so I had to clone that too to get the white spot out. Once all of that was accomplished, I just used the vignette feature.

Purdy is a wonderfully happy little dog. She has an unmatched zest for life and she doesn't hesitate to voice it when ever anyone comes to visit. She seems to want us to join her excitement for life. Anyway, on this photo I used several of the Photopaint 9 features. First I used the lasso mask to mask just Purdy out then reversed the mask. I then used the Julia Set Explorer feature under the "effects" menu. I chose "multen metal". Next I vignetted using a black background and a circular vignett. Lastly I use the vignette again with a white background and set it for rectangular. This is fun!!!

Abstract This is really a photograph I took! The original photo was taken using the negative selection on the digital camera. I have used a couple of features in photopaint that allow for creating tiles or backgrounds. I still want to do some practicing because I think this could lead to some interesting effects. This is my first attempt so it is not as smooth as I would like. I am placing on the page just to show another of the wonderful effects you can create. I used effects, fancy, ant terrazzo, and pinwheel. Then effects, creative, weather then snow. For the last treatment I used a vignette, and rectangle.

Roller Blade? This one was easy and I used very little manipulating. I took a photo had taken a few weeks before on my driveway, masked out my grandson. Then pulled up a photo of a canyon scene and placed my grandson in the scene. Then I did a square vignette. Wonder if he would be thinking about roller blading down into the canyon? That would be beautiful wouldn't it?

Well, I really didn't do anything to this photo except for the vignette. I just couldn't pass up the picture. He was having such a great time testing the umbrella.
Jumping
It had been raining and the boys used the umbrellas to keep them dry while using the scateboard and in-line skates. When the sun came out they decided to try another test. To see if the umbrella would work like a parachute..

Again, I really didn't do much. We have a children's park, in which there are statues of fairtale type animals, next door to where I work. One day on my lunch hour I went out to take some photos of them. I choose this one for today's addition to my page.
Owl
I cropped just a small section from the right side; then I put an abstract frame around the photo; next I vignetted it to soften the corners. I also added a sparkle to the owl's eye using the paint tool and choosing a star shaped nib with the paint color being white..

The original photo was in color. It also had more in the background than I wanted so I cropped it. I chose image, mode, duotone (mono - black and white) in photopaint 9. Then I changed the mode to RGB color (24 bit) so that I could get a color to the "roses" that I put in her hair. Then I chose the paint tool and a flower shaped "nib"; checked to make sure the paint color was one I liked then clicked twice in her hair. Then the last touch was to vignette.

The photo is of my son, taken at a family gathering at a popular restaurant. Again, the original photo was in color. I used the photopaint 9 menu choice of effects, texture and etching to get the relief effect and experimented with the settings to get the effect I wanted. Then I wasn't totally happy with the color tones so I changed the mode (image, mode, duotone). I finished with a square vignette. I like using the vignette feather because it softens the edges of the finished art work.

Sepia Isn't she gorgeous? I was trying to get the old fashioned sepia color to this originally colored photo. I am not quite satisfied with the tone yet so I will be trying some more. Anyway, I cropped the original photo, then used image, mode, and chose grayscale. Then image, mode, duotone, duotone from the down arrow and chose pantone, double clicked on the pantone selection and experimented with the tone I wanted (this is where I still need some experimenting). And of course as my usual finish I vignetted the finished photo.

Kisses "But I love you so much. I can't stop kissing you". My grandson was lying on the front porch playing with my dachshund and she decided it was time to kiss him without let up. I couldn't resist taking the photo. Anyway, I masked out the heads of my grandson and of Heidi. Then I inverted the mask so that I could fill in the background only. Then used the flood fill; used a textured fill, chose edit and picked a rainbow colored fill. And of course ended with the vignette.

I really played with this one. I took the original photo of the medallion with my digital cameras. I had just a little area that I needed to crop. After cropping I masked the medallion I masked it and reversed the mask
Owl
so I could play with the background. I used an effect called fractral magic 4, then another effect called metal effect. I used a soft spot light. Then reversed the mask again and used a creative frame with a brown background. And ended with a square vignette.

Guess what? This photo was really taken on a bright sunny day. It had rained earlier but the rain had passed and the sun had come out full force. I didn't crop the photo at all I just used effects, creative, weather, and rain. Adjusted the rain density and direction.
Rainy Day
After that I used a spotlight filter and adjusted the direction. Of course I then used the vignette effect (under effects, creative then vignette). So with Photopaint 9 I created a thunder storm from a bright sunny day. .

The background on this photo was terrible. So I used the magic wand tool to mask it out. Then I used the flood fill to fill in the background. Then I used a small spotlight plug in to bring out the shine of her coat and sparkle in her eyes. And of course the good oldstandby, vignette. There are so many flood fill backgrounds to choose from it is hard to match the subject with one of the choices. The new plug ins I have also have some great backgrounds to use to fill. And using the mask tools allow me to cut out just the parts that I want to. .

I took this photo when we visited a local county fair. I wanted to give it a look that seems like it was done by hand using water color paints. So I used the effects/creative/watercolor choice and then framed it with the auto f/x filter.

Tiger resting Boy was this one fun to do. I snapped a picture of my closed venetian blinds and a photo of my kitty resting on the back of my lounge chair. Then the fun began. I opened both of the photos in my photopaint9. Then I selected the clone tool, double clicked on it to open the tool settings roll-up. With the photo of the kitty open, I chose the fine streaks as the type. Then I placed the cursor on kittys nose and clicked the left mouse button. I then opened the venetian blinds photo. Placed the cursor in about the middle of the photo, clicked the mouse button and began to drag the brush to show as much of the kitty as I wanted to show through. I cropped the finished image to the size I wanted then the usual vignette to clean up the edges of the finished photo. Before I vignetted there was a little clean up, so I used the straight close tool to clone in some areas.

Karen This is Karen, my neice. This photo reminds me of a jeanie in a bottle. So I used the technique of creating the perception of a glass globe. First I used the circle mask tool to create the "ball". Then choose the effects menu, 3D effects and choose map to object. Click reset then ok. Now select the paint tool and choose custom airbrush. Change the type to wide cover. Make the paint color white and change the transparency to 70. Paint the edges of the ball white with the bottom being black. Then apply the lens flare filter from the render on the effects menu. Lastly I chose a plug in filter to do the background. And vignetted to soften the over all edges.

This was a project from one of my new very young friends. I used my digital camera to take a photo of this piece of art work-a rainbow to which she had added rainbow colored streamers. There was a lot of extra "stuff" around the art piece that I used photopaint 9 features to "clone" out. Then I cropped the rest of the unneeded parts out. After that I spent a great deal of time searching
Somewhere...
for a software program that offered classic photographic frames. I finally found one that was perfect and has lots of frames to choose from (I'll use more later). Oh I forgot one step: I used a feature in photopaint that allows you to "clone" one photo into a blank file and use "paint strokes" to slowly bring the original photo into to blank frame as a "hand painted", canvas like graphic..

I didn't do much to this photo. It was pretty good to being with or at least told the story without any manipulation. I simply vignetted several times changing the color and size of the vignett each time I did i. I didn't even crop the original photo. I did adjust the brightness/contrast
First Snow Fall
(click image, adjust, brightness-contrast and adjusted. Then I vignetted several times (click effects, creative, vignette) at that point you can choose rectangle, oval, circle, or square and click the eye dropper to choose a color for the vignette from within the photo itself and adjust the size of the vignette. .

I found something to use in place of vignettes (maybe). At least it is another new (to me) technique. It is fairly simple. I cropped my original photo and had to use the clone tool a little bit to do some minor touchups. Then click on edit, fill and chose bitmap. Then for this photo I chose the preset clouds tile. Click on the transparency tool and choose elliptical. After that you just do some manipulations pulling the adjustable "boxes". I don't know that I would use it in place of vignette but it does give an interesting effect. I am always looking for new ways to touch up photos. I found one that is going to take me a while but I will put it up here when I get it done.
